The Salvation Army Christmas Depot

Volunteers are needed to assist the Salvation Army in their Christmas Depot program.

Judy Williams is the project coordinator for this project as a part of Savior Serve.
Please read her message below for volunteer and contact information:

The flyer says afternoon shift workers are especially needed. The afternoon is 12:30 to 4:30. Morning is 8 to 12:30 if you wanted to advertise both. The year I worked, some people stayed all day, and a light lunch was provided.

The location is in the former HQ building in the Pembroke area. I can't find a street address since the building is empty. It is on the south side of Virginia Beach Blvd west of Independence.

The SA will give a brief orientation to the task at the beginning of each shift. You will be walking with the shoppers so wear comfortable shoes. You can take breaks when needed between shoppers.

Use email jwilliams@tcc.edu and phone 641-4549.

We are supposed to have an estimate on the number of workers when we return the commitment form to the SA, so a response should be made ASAP. However, workers will not be turned away.

Gosnold testimony

I just returned from an evening at the Gosnold apartments. This ministry has been meeting every Thursday evening for over two years. It is a housing facility for people who were chronically homeless for over a year. Bob Williams has been the visionary behind the ministry, but others have joined him in his vision and they are making quite a difference in the lives of the people.

Every two steps that I took this evening, I was approached by one of the residents about a spiritual need or a prayer request. Many of them have mental issues, addiction issues, or severe life experiences. Despite all of this, they come to us and trust us. They know beyond the shadow of a doubt that we love them. It has taken a long time. We were not always accepted. But we are making a difference.

I spoke with many of the volunteers tonight and encouraged them in the work that they are doing. They are loving people with the love of Christ. They are Jesus to a people who see very little of Jesus at any other time. Whether they call bingo, circulate speaking with the residents, have a birthday party for Jesus, or simply speak an encouraging word. . .every little thing counts. We have sown seeds of the gospel regularly for two years now and the fruit is beginning to appear.

Before leaving this evening, a resident named B. pulled me aside to ask prayer for her older parents who have divorced and remarried other people. E. also sought prayer. Her arthritis is debilitating. She looked at me tonight and said directly, "The only person that can help me is Jesus. Please pray for me." So I did just that. Many others laughed and joked with me about my Spanish speaking experiences. It was a sincere time of fellowship among people whose lives are deeply troubled much of the time.

In the parking lot, a leader shared with me that another resident who has visited our church had given an offering to the Reach Beyond goal of our church. A person who is struggling to pay $50 per month for rent, gave an offering to our church as we seek to reach more people with the Gospel! He also shared about how our members are growing in leadership as they have taken responsibilities. So many are finding a place of service and growing in ways that we never expected. The ministry is multiplying and reaching out to other areas (like the Cloverleaf).

It is late and my words are dwindling. Suffice it to say, I have cried some this evening. Not because I am sad, but because I get to see such incredible manifestations of the glory of the body of Christ! I get to see God moving in the lives of people that most others have forgotten. I get to see disciples growing and multiplying the faith.

2 SaviorServe Opps at Poplar Hall Elementary School

We have received a request from Poplar Hall Elementary School's physical education teacher to assist with beautification of the gymnasium. If you are interested in taking a group (Bible study class, L3 group, etc) to Poplar Halls Elementary and helping them out this Christmas season, please contact Mrs. Page at 892.3280 to set up a day & time. This opportunity is available through December 21st.

Another need at Poplar Halls Elementary School is mentoring during school hours. If you have a heart for children and would be available to invest one hour per week into the life of an elementary schooler, please contact Mrs. Page for more information.

Free Panera Bread to a Good Cause

***Below is an e-mail we received from the Coronado School Ministry. Please contact Carolyn Vanderwarker if you know of any organizations who might benefit from this ministry or if you are able to assist. Thank you!

On behalf of the Coronado Ministry, Brad & I pick up Panera bread at Town Center for the Coronado students each Thursday evening & deliver it to the school the following morning. We are in need of someone to pick up the bread and deliver it to ANOTHER ministry when the school is closed for holidays or breaks. We have the upcoming holidays and the girls will be out of school again. Our Thursday evening slot falls on Christmas Eve & New Year’s Eve, and the managers at Panera Bread tell me they will be opened. Is there a ministry at church who could take this over on Christmas Eve & New Year’s Eve? I realize the holidays are a challenging timeframe to find someone to do such a task. We are out of town for both holidays, and I know there are people in need out there who could use the bread.

Looking ahead we also have the on-going need for a ministry to take it over during Spring Break & Summer vacation. Last summer, I brought the bread to the Union Mission downtown, but they had plenty of food. After several attempts I was unable to find anyone in the church to take it over last summer, so I was able to get another church to take our slot temporarily. I am hoping to keep it in FBCN and would like to invite your thoughts of how this need can be met within our own ministries.

***Please note that the task requires heavy lifting and a spacious vehicle: We average 6-7 large trash bags of bread + 3 boxes of pastries per week. The bread is very heavy!

Thank you so much for any input you can offer.

SaviorServe Opportunity - Landscaping at Arrowhead Elementary

Below is an e-mail we received requesting service through SaviorServe. If your group is interested in taking on this project, please contact Susan Briggs at sbriggs@firstnorfolk.org or 466.5181.

Thank you for reaching out to the community through your SaviorServe mission. It takes all citizens pulling together to help one another strengthen and grow. With pride in your organization, I am moved by your group's energy and dedication to giving back the community this Christmas.

Our need...
As you know, many cities throughout our nation are struggling with massive budget shortfalls. What often is cut is funding for grounds and road maintenance and this is evident on the grouds of our schools. Therefore, community volunteer groups are looked upon to help, and most often help without being asked. However, it is found that if one group works alone, it can be tapped quickly of it's volunteer energy. So, thankfully, our school is happy to receive your assistance.

Our Arrowhead Elementary School grounds could use some volunteer hours and extra mulch placed in the planting areas. The Carolanne Farms Civic League donated and planted new bushes, flowers, border plants, and rearranged several established border and evergreen plants. However there is more to be done.

What I advocate for our community's Arrowhead Elementary school is that we take up your group offer to help the community in the way of redistributing some plants, attack some weed issues that has grown since the last thin layer of mulch was applied by City, and if possible, apply an additional layer of mulch to keep the weeds from reemerging.

For photos of what has been done thus far, you can visit www.cafcivicleague.blogspot.com.

You may contact me, Brenda Armitage at 714-2772 as I will happily share what has been done and what other items still need to be addressed.

The address of the school is 5549 Susquehanna Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. The phone number is 648-2040. Please advise what dates work best for your group and I will confer with the princinple of Arrowhead Elementary, Ms. Constance James.

Warmly and sincerely,

Brenda

Moving Ministry

We received this request today and would like to post it for classes and individuals to consider. It involves a single woman in Virginia Beach who has suffered many health difficulties. Our church has been ministering to her and her family has requested the following assistance:

Saturday, October 24th - 8 AM - Noon - pack items in boxes - all items need to be packed for intended long storage - we need 10 - 15 people who are good at packing items. If they have boxes, tape and newspaper that would be helpful.

Saturday, October 31st - 8 AM - Noon - pack and place items in a big U-haul truck. Looking for people who can move heavy and light objects for secure storage.

This ministry need is a great opportunity for a SS class, Single's Ministry or maybe the Mens ministry who might be able to help in this small but very necessary way.

I will be coordinating the help for these two days. If you are interested, please let me know.

Thank you -

Opportunities to help a Sister Church

We recently received requests from Park Place Baptist Church to come alongside of them and help with a few needs that they have. Let's begin praying about these and see what God might do!

1.) Would your missions team be interested in putting together Thanksgiving and Christmas "baskets" for distribution to Park Place people? We have already been getting requests. I called the Salvation Army, because someone told me they were a good resource, and they are not able to do them this year. A basket might include a turkey or small ham, instant mashed potatoes, StoveTop-type stuffing mix, canned vegetables, rolls and maybe a frozen pie, Mrs. Smith's-type. Any number would be a huge help.

2.) Would your folks have an interest in running a food drive for us? Our food pantry continues to grow. We have been relying on the FoodBank of Southeast Virginia's Fresh Foods program, but the grocery from which we pick up has been giving less and less. Produce season is winding down, too. Most Thursdays we have at least 50 folks come for food, and at the end of the month, 75 or 80. I had to turn a few away last week, and this week, I know I will not have enough food. A food drive would be a wonderful way to help us, and maybe we could have a big Saturday giveaway or something similar.

3.) Bicycles. Would it be possible for someone on your missions team to collect some good used bikes for our Heaven On Wheels bike ministry? I am attaching a flyer, and perhaps someone could post it somewhere even if these ideas don't pan out. We continue to get people looking for transportation vouchers, cash to get to bus so they can go to the doctor or a job.

4.) Field Day. Here we are in the inner city, right in the middle of the neighborhood, and our building is falling down. We would love to do some painting, interior and exterior. We would love to do some plastering, roof patching, and to display the beautiful stained-glass windows by getting the old covers off of them. I wonder if there is a Habitat For Humanity for churches. The Operation Blessing team that recently helped Spartan Village over by NSU is what we need here. Could anyone from First Baptist pitch in?

Project Comfort

Our Project Comfort ladies never cease to amaze me. Over the last week I have watched them send off a young lady named Candace who they have taken under their wing. They have stayed by her side as she made her profession of faith two weeks ago, they cheered her on as she was baptized, and then they had a send off for her on Tuesday as she prepares to go to college.

You would think that all of the quilts, pillows, and other sewing projects that they have made to minister to others in our local hospitals would be sufficient. . .They continue to seek new ways to Love God, Love Others, and Live the Mission.

If you would like to be a part of what God is doing at Project Comfort, contact Susan at sbriggs@firstnorfolk.org or 461.3226 for more information.

CATALYST Team

In an effort to bridge the gap between International and Local Missions we are challenging our people to seek a people group in Hampton Roads and find a way to minister to that group. Many of our members have been on International journeys, but have never made the connection that there are people from that same culture living right here in Hampton Roads. We want to challenge our members to truly be Missionary Followers of Christ by engaging those groups and seeking to minister to them. This will look differently for every group, but we are confident that God has called and equipped us to reach them with the Good News by giving us His Spirit (Acts 1:8).

What does this look like?
You covenant with us- You step forward and say that you will begin with a 6 month commitment to read, study, and serve among another culture in Hampton Roads.
We covenant with you- We commit to train, encourage, and guide you as you seek to reach this group.

What is the goal? The Great Commission calls us to make disciples. The greatest way to do so is in the context of a Church. This may be our church or a church plant. We walk by faith and trust God in the process. (1 Corinthians 3:6)

Live the Mission, Be a Missionary

We are a people who are very programmatic. We like to have everything in its place and have all of the answers. While our culture dictates such, does the Bible present such examples? It seems like the example of scripture is much different.

People who had met Jesus had to tell others about Him. Not after some elaborate training exercise, but naturally going to their circles of influence and reaching people with the saving power of the Gospel. That is what I saw recently as I traveled many hours from the USA and visited housechurches that are growing and multiplying because their people have accepted the fact that they are ministers of the Gospel. Not just the trainer who leads their group, but them. They serve, they suffer, they rejoice, they. . .live the mission.

I am praying for a core group in our Church who are ready to extravagantly love God by living the mission in Hampton Roads. I don't know exactly what it will look like, but I am confident that we will never be the same.

Where is your mission field? If it is only once per year, hundreds of miles away. . .go back and read Acts 1:8. God doesn't just want seasons of your life, He wants your life. Those who are ready to reach Hampton Roads are invited to join me for coffee and begin praying earnestly for the next step as you live the mission.

Still praying for laborers in the harvest,
Craig Clayton

Love thy neighbor

We received this message from a local agency that we have worked with. It is not a Christian ministry effort, but the love of Christ may be shared in word and deed while participating.

Operation Blessing U.S. Disaster Relief is currently working in Norfolk, VA in response of the flash flooding Last week, flash flooding damaged several homes next to Norfolk State University. Floodwaters rose during a period of 4-6 hours causing homes to receive upwards of 20" of water on the main level. Needless to say, everything the water touched inside these residences was destroyed. Operation Blessing is asking for strong arms who may be willing to help serve the community by tearing out soaked carpets, tearing out sheetrock and insulation just above the waterline and help clean up resident's homes that do not have insurance or the means to cover it.

When and Where
Volunteers will meet Monday, August 17th - Friday, August 21st at 8:30AM daily on the corner of Joseph St. and Madison Ave. (look for the white tent in front of 1634 Corprew Ave., Norfolk, VA). Volunteers will receive a FREE Operation Blessing T-Shirt, fill out paperwork and begin work by 9AM. Volunteers will be assigned to crews of 6-8, led by an Operation Blessing project foreman. Work days will end at 4PM when all tools will be packed up.

Operation Blessing will provide the necessary tools, MRE's for lunch (you may bring a sack lunch if you prefer) and personal protective equipment (PPE), but volunteers will be responsible for their and transportation. It will also be a good idea to bring a supply of water, though Operation Blessing will have some on site.

Questions may be directed to our Volunteer & Work Coordinator at (757) 274-8650.

Please have the results of the sign-up sheet emailed to chris.williams@ob.org or faxed to (757) 277-0231 on Sunday evening.

Let me know if you think this may be possible.

Across the street or around the world

BT served on one of our international teams this summer and was impressed by how missionaries used the surfing culture to reach young people with the Good News of Jesus Christ. Even thought he was impacted greatly, he returned home and began working again giving little thought to how God might use that experience back home.

While surfing with some young people recently, one of them turned to him and said, "Wouldn't it be great if we had a Bible study for surfers where we could talk about life." BT was reminded of what he saw overseas and realized that God might be calling him to minister to young people in our local surf culture who may or may not be churched.

Pray that God will give BT the faith and courage to follow God's leadership and reach these young people with the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Chef's for Jesus

One of the many bright spots in our missions ministry is a growing group of people who are using their gifts for God's glory. Dennis is a Chef who is a member of our Church and works in Town Center, Virginia Beach. Several months ago, he accepted an invitation to visit the Gosnold apartments. Once he visited. . .he was hooked! He has been leading cooking demonstrations for the residents for close to a year now. He humbly shared with me yesterday that it seems so simple. He just uses his natural talents to share with others and through such a natural demonstration, God works in the lives of people in need.

Pray for Dennis as he is mentoring other Chefs. We are praying that they can work with our other multi-housing and subsidized housing ministries very soon.

Pray that God will continue to raise up laborers for the harvest who take their natural gifts and use them for God's glory!

A Request from our Friends at Va. Supportive Housing

On September 11, 2009, United Way is hosting a project called “DAY OF CARING”. This project provides a way for businesses and organizations to build camaraderie and goodwill among employees while helping the community. I am the Volunteer Coordinator for Virginia Supportive Housing in the South Hampton Roads area, and we need your assistance. We have twenty volunteers scheduled to do landscaping/beautification at one of our property sites, and we need gardening tools (wheel barrows, rakes, hoes, pruning shears, brooms, dust pans, and shovels) to help get this project accomplished. We really would appreciate it if you could donate or loan us some tools.
If you decide to loan us your tools, then please mark each tool that you loan and I will make sure they are accounted for by the end of the project. If you decide to loan/donate us your tools, then I will need them by the first week of September and loaned tools will be returned as soon as possible. Although, if you decide to donate your tools we would greatly appreciate it. If you have any questions, I can be reached at the number/email address listed below. Thank you for your much needed support and generosity.
Many Blessings,

A New Opportunity with the Cloverleaf

When the Winning Walk class accepted the challenge of serving at the Cloverleaf Apartments, they may not have known what they were getting into. This new residence in Virginia Beach is a housing development managed by Virginia Supportive Housing. It houses 60 residents from the surrounding area who were chronically homeless. The first residence that our Church partnered with was the Gosnold apartments in Norfolk, Virginia on the corner of Gosnold avenue and 25th street. First Norfolk members have been serving there for two years now.

The Winning Walk class was able to do great things in ministering to the residents through a cookout with live music and games. Many of their members circulated and shared their motivations for coming out on such a hot day. They were there because the love of Christ compelled them. It was evident in everything that they said and did.

Subsequently, four residents attended our church on the following Sunday (with transportation provided by our members), others have asked about attending on a Wednesday evening, and the class hopes to begin a monthly ministry with the residents playing games and sharing in Bible study.

This is a group who has taken the challenge of Big Serve and is LIVING THE MISSION!
While God has opened many doors, they would like to involve others in serving when they are unable to during the month. If there is a class or an individual who is interested in serving at the Cloverleaf, contact Susan Briggs in the Missions office of our Church and we will assist in connecting you to this wonderful ministry!

Gosnold Residents Say Thank You!

One of our Big Serve events was at the Gosnold apartments in which two classes were responsible for the food and worship time with residents. Many people were able to spend time with the residents and encourage them spiritually. Our orchestra was able to play for the residents for the first time and it was a very special event for those in attendance.

Don't forget!
We have an ongoing ministry there on Thursday evenings and some residents visit our Church on Sunday mornings as well. Volunteers are always needed to serve with this ministry and more information can be obtained from Bob Williams at robertwilliams@prodigy.net or Susan Briggs at 461.3226.

It is about time!

It has taken some time, but we are finally up and running with bigserve247! (That is not two hundred forty seven, but twenty four seven) This is an attempt to share a portion of what we hear on a regular basis from our teams and individuals who are serving locally. This will be a place to post our Group Serve newsletter as well as testimonies, thank you notes, etc. related to our local ministry. It will also be a clearing house for opportunities that appear on the radar. You will be able to visit and read about all that God is doing within a few days of the day that you are logging on.

So welcome! It is going to be a great ride. One small step for missions at First Norfolk, One giant leap for the Kingdom of God reaching Hampton Roads and the world!
