Habitat for Humanity Invitation

We received this invitation from Habitat for Humanity recently. In order to accept, we will need a group of our members committed to serving and a project leader who will work as a liaison between our church and Habitat for Humanity.

Dear Mr. Clayton,

My name is Jeanne McDonnell and I am on the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity South Hampton Roads. Adam Cole provided my with your email as a point of contact for First Baptist Church of Norfolk. We are very excited to tell you about an opportunity for First Baptist to get involved with Habitat for Humanity. We are getting ready to start building two homes in the Red Mill neighborhood of Virginia Beach. One of the homes has been designated as our first formal Habitat Apostles Build.

An Apostles Build is a Habitat program where twelve (or more) churches come together to raise the money and to provide the labor and prayer support to build a Habitat for Humanity house. This is an opportunity for churches to serve others in the community, in the way that Jesus’ apostles served. Building a house gives members of a congregation a concrete way to put their faith into action. An Apostles Build project also has the potential to build community among churches that have never worked together before.

If you think this is something your church would be interested in, Kathy Wright (Our Faith in Action Manager) and I would love to come out and give you or your designated folks more information. This particular Apostles Build will become a home for the King Family – a beautiful and deserving family with five boys! Their picture and some information is attached.

I hope that First Baptist will consider being one of our 12 churches for the Apostle Build and I look forward to hearing from you.

All the best,

Jeanne McDonnell

Opportunity at Poplar Halls Elementary School

I had a wonderful meeting today with a few of the leaders at the Poplar Halls Elementary School. They were so delighted and appreciative of our church's willingness to serve in the community!

In the course of our meeting, they shared some anticipated needs that I would like to pass on to you.

Mentoring(grades 1-5)- This program consists of one hour per week of meetings at the school. One week they meet as a group with the mentors and then the next week the mentors meet with the children. There is an orientation for all mentors that follows a background check (standard in most places, even church), submission of name, ssn, date of birth, and a tb skin test ($5 or you can submit a current test report). Time spent with the child will usually be focused upon school work studying Reading, Math, and Writing. There may be other needs as well during SOL testing times. Some tutors also visit as a lunch buddy or for breakfast in the morning.

The other needs that the school has are in relation to the gymnasium:
The gym is in need of some stenciling of letters on the floor with quick drying paint. You do not have to be an artist to do this project. Just bring a willing heart.

As the weather warms, they also need assistance in installing basketball goals and painting hopscotch games on the sidewalk. Carpentry skills will come in handy with the basketball goal and some artistic flare would be nice for the hopscotch areas.

For more information about both of these needs, you may contact:
Pamela Paige, Site Coordinator/Student Mentorship Program- pampaige@nps.k12.va.us
Ginger Rothermel, PE teacher- grotherm@nps.k12.va.us
Chan Walden, Parent Liaison.

Come on First Norfolk, Let's live the mission and help this school!!!!
