Opportunity at Poplar Halls Elementary School

I had a wonderful meeting today with a few of the leaders at the Poplar Halls Elementary School. They were so delighted and appreciative of our church's willingness to serve in the community!

In the course of our meeting, they shared some anticipated needs that I would like to pass on to you.

Mentoring(grades 1-5)- This program consists of one hour per week of meetings at the school. One week they meet as a group with the mentors and then the next week the mentors meet with the children. There is an orientation for all mentors that follows a background check (standard in most places, even church), submission of name, ssn, date of birth, and a tb skin test ($5 or you can submit a current test report). Time spent with the child will usually be focused upon school work studying Reading, Math, and Writing. There may be other needs as well during SOL testing times. Some tutors also visit as a lunch buddy or for breakfast in the morning.

The other needs that the school has are in relation to the gymnasium:
The gym is in need of some stenciling of letters on the floor with quick drying paint. You do not have to be an artist to do this project. Just bring a willing heart.

As the weather warms, they also need assistance in installing basketball goals and painting hopscotch games on the sidewalk. Carpentry skills will come in handy with the basketball goal and some artistic flare would be nice for the hopscotch areas.

For more information about both of these needs, you may contact:
Pamela Paige, Site Coordinator/Student Mentorship Program- pampaige@nps.k12.va.us
Ginger Rothermel, PE teacher- grotherm@nps.k12.va.us
Chan Walden, Parent Liaison.

Come on First Norfolk, Let's live the mission and help this school!!!!
