The Salvation Army Christmas Depot

Volunteers are needed to assist the Salvation Army in their Christmas Depot program.

Judy Williams is the project coordinator for this project as a part of Savior Serve.
Please read her message below for volunteer and contact information:

The flyer says afternoon shift workers are especially needed. The afternoon is 12:30 to 4:30. Morning is 8 to 12:30 if you wanted to advertise both. The year I worked, some people stayed all day, and a light lunch was provided.

The location is in the former HQ building in the Pembroke area. I can't find a street address since the building is empty. It is on the south side of Virginia Beach Blvd west of Independence.

The SA will give a brief orientation to the task at the beginning of each shift. You will be walking with the shoppers so wear comfortable shoes. You can take breaks when needed between shoppers.

Use email jwilliams@tcc.edu and phone 641-4549.

We are supposed to have an estimate on the number of workers when we return the commitment form to the SA, so a response should be made ASAP. However, workers will not be turned away.

Gosnold testimony

I just returned from an evening at the Gosnold apartments. This ministry has been meeting every Thursday evening for over two years. It is a housing facility for people who were chronically homeless for over a year. Bob Williams has been the visionary behind the ministry, but others have joined him in his vision and they are making quite a difference in the lives of the people.

Every two steps that I took this evening, I was approached by one of the residents about a spiritual need or a prayer request. Many of them have mental issues, addiction issues, or severe life experiences. Despite all of this, they come to us and trust us. They know beyond the shadow of a doubt that we love them. It has taken a long time. We were not always accepted. But we are making a difference.

I spoke with many of the volunteers tonight and encouraged them in the work that they are doing. They are loving people with the love of Christ. They are Jesus to a people who see very little of Jesus at any other time. Whether they call bingo, circulate speaking with the residents, have a birthday party for Jesus, or simply speak an encouraging word. . .every little thing counts. We have sown seeds of the gospel regularly for two years now and the fruit is beginning to appear.

Before leaving this evening, a resident named B. pulled me aside to ask prayer for her older parents who have divorced and remarried other people. E. also sought prayer. Her arthritis is debilitating. She looked at me tonight and said directly, "The only person that can help me is Jesus. Please pray for me." So I did just that. Many others laughed and joked with me about my Spanish speaking experiences. It was a sincere time of fellowship among people whose lives are deeply troubled much of the time.

In the parking lot, a leader shared with me that another resident who has visited our church had given an offering to the Reach Beyond goal of our church. A person who is struggling to pay $50 per month for rent, gave an offering to our church as we seek to reach more people with the Gospel! He also shared about how our members are growing in leadership as they have taken responsibilities. So many are finding a place of service and growing in ways that we never expected. The ministry is multiplying and reaching out to other areas (like the Cloverleaf).

It is late and my words are dwindling. Suffice it to say, I have cried some this evening. Not because I am sad, but because I get to see such incredible manifestations of the glory of the body of Christ! I get to see God moving in the lives of people that most others have forgotten. I get to see disciples growing and multiplying the faith.

2 SaviorServe Opps at Poplar Hall Elementary School

We have received a request from Poplar Hall Elementary School's physical education teacher to assist with beautification of the gymnasium. If you are interested in taking a group (Bible study class, L3 group, etc) to Poplar Halls Elementary and helping them out this Christmas season, please contact Mrs. Page at 892.3280 to set up a day & time. This opportunity is available through December 21st.

Another need at Poplar Halls Elementary School is mentoring during school hours. If you have a heart for children and would be available to invest one hour per week into the life of an elementary schooler, please contact Mrs. Page for more information.

Free Panera Bread to a Good Cause

***Below is an e-mail we received from the Coronado School Ministry. Please contact Carolyn Vanderwarker if you know of any organizations who might benefit from this ministry or if you are able to assist. Thank you!

On behalf of the Coronado Ministry, Brad & I pick up Panera bread at Town Center for the Coronado students each Thursday evening & deliver it to the school the following morning. We are in need of someone to pick up the bread and deliver it to ANOTHER ministry when the school is closed for holidays or breaks. We have the upcoming holidays and the girls will be out of school again. Our Thursday evening slot falls on Christmas Eve & New Year’s Eve, and the managers at Panera Bread tell me they will be opened. Is there a ministry at church who could take this over on Christmas Eve & New Year’s Eve? I realize the holidays are a challenging timeframe to find someone to do such a task. We are out of town for both holidays, and I know there are people in need out there who could use the bread.

Looking ahead we also have the on-going need for a ministry to take it over during Spring Break & Summer vacation. Last summer, I brought the bread to the Union Mission downtown, but they had plenty of food. After several attempts I was unable to find anyone in the church to take it over last summer, so I was able to get another church to take our slot temporarily. I am hoping to keep it in FBCN and would like to invite your thoughts of how this need can be met within our own ministries.

***Please note that the task requires heavy lifting and a spacious vehicle: We average 6-7 large trash bags of bread + 3 boxes of pastries per week. The bread is very heavy!

Thank you so much for any input you can offer.

SaviorServe Opportunity - Landscaping at Arrowhead Elementary

Below is an e-mail we received requesting service through SaviorServe. If your group is interested in taking on this project, please contact Susan Briggs at sbriggs@firstnorfolk.org or 466.5181.

Thank you for reaching out to the community through your SaviorServe mission. It takes all citizens pulling together to help one another strengthen and grow. With pride in your organization, I am moved by your group's energy and dedication to giving back the community this Christmas.

Our need...
As you know, many cities throughout our nation are struggling with massive budget shortfalls. What often is cut is funding for grounds and road maintenance and this is evident on the grouds of our schools. Therefore, community volunteer groups are looked upon to help, and most often help without being asked. However, it is found that if one group works alone, it can be tapped quickly of it's volunteer energy. So, thankfully, our school is happy to receive your assistance.

Our Arrowhead Elementary School grounds could use some volunteer hours and extra mulch placed in the planting areas. The Carolanne Farms Civic League donated and planted new bushes, flowers, border plants, and rearranged several established border and evergreen plants. However there is more to be done.

What I advocate for our community's Arrowhead Elementary school is that we take up your group offer to help the community in the way of redistributing some plants, attack some weed issues that has grown since the last thin layer of mulch was applied by City, and if possible, apply an additional layer of mulch to keep the weeds from reemerging.

For photos of what has been done thus far, you can visit www.cafcivicleague.blogspot.com.

You may contact me, Brenda Armitage at 714-2772 as I will happily share what has been done and what other items still need to be addressed.

The address of the school is 5549 Susquehanna Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. The phone number is 648-2040. Please advise what dates work best for your group and I will confer with the princinple of Arrowhead Elementary, Ms. Constance James.

Warmly and sincerely,

Brenda
